Shield One started with a push mower and a fourteen-year-old looking for work. Michael Skelhorne cut his first lawn for money at 14 and never stopped — through more than twenty years of shift work in policing, the business ran in the hours in between, one property at a time.

In May 2023 he incorporated it. What had been a side business for three decades became Shield One Landscaping, and the focus moved toward the work that rewards doing things properly: commercial grounds and snow.

Policing shaped how the company runs. Every visit is logged and time-stamped with a weather record, because you learn quickly that the report matters as much as the response. Crews roll when conditions say go, not when it's convenient. And $5,000,000 in commercial general liability sits behind every property we service.

Today Shield One holds multi-site contracts across Scarborough, Markham and Durham Region, with a dedicated plow-and-salt fleet that stays on the corridor all winter. We still look after residential properties, and the same standard applies to both. Michael and his son Austin run it together, on the quotes and on the jobsites.
